Highland Walk chosen as LPGA-USGA Girls Golf Site

MARIETTA, Ga. – Highland Walk Golf Course in Royston has established a new site for LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, the only national initiative designed specifically for girls. Open to girls ages 7 to 17, this program encourages girls to learn to play the game, build friendships, and learn to compete in a positive and supportive environment. It is organized and implemented through a partnership between The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Foundation and the United States Golf Association (USGA).

LPGA-USGA Girls Golf of Royston is one of over 170 host sites located across the United States. This national initiative currently reaches more than 4,000 girls. Karl Gross, General Manager and PGA golf professional of Highland Walk GC, will serve as site director. The first day of programming will be on Saturday, December 4, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Highland Walk’s driving range and is open to parents and girls who are interested in learning to play the game of golf. The program will meet twice a month for a year at a fee of $75 per girl. During the 2005 program, participants will learn the fundamentals of the game, rules, etiquette, and inevitably be exposed to the spirit of the game and the values inherent to golf. Equipped with these skills, participants will also be given the opportunity to play on the course.

Founded in 2002, Highland Walk GC prides itself on offering a scenic and challenging 18-hole golf course with panoramic views of the North Georgia Mountains. One of eight Georgia State Park Golf Courses, this junior-friendly facility has an active junior golf program offering three youth summer camps a year, as well as its own set of junior tees to encourage new golfers to play and enjoy the game. Additionally, as part of the Georgia State Park Golf Course system, all kids under the age of 18 receive course access at $5 per round. In a similar effort to foster program development, Highland Walk has expanded its reach and partnered with LPGA-USGA Girls Golf which provides girls with the opportunity to achieve success and have fun while establishing a life-long interest in the game.

In 2004, the USGA partnered with the Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA) to develop a pilot project focusing on growing girls’ golf within the state through the national initiative LPGA-USGA Girls Golf. Goals of this partnership include increasing the number of LPGA-USGA Girls Golf sites in Georgia, building strong relationships between the sites and the GSGA, and ultimately providing more opportunities for girls in Georgia to learn and enjoy the game of golf. Royston is the 14th Girls Golf site in Georgia joining: Alpharetta, Athens, Atlanta – Charlie Yates GC, Atlanta – Sugar Creek GC, Atlanta – The First Tee of John A. White, Augusta, Brunswick, Cobb/Cherokee County, Macon, Perry, Rutledge, Savannah, and Stone Mountain.
